History
The first mass-produced monocoque off-roader: the 2121 Zhatva of 1977, with a unitary body, coil-sprung independent front suspension, permanent four-wheel drive, a lockable centre differential and a two-speed transfer case, the 1.6 carburettor four (80 hp), then the 1.7 of the 21213 (1993) and the fuel-injected 21214; about 650,000 sold worldwide by 2020 and still built at Tolyatti as the Zhatva Legend since January 2021.
Sura designed the Zhatva as a car-based rural vehicle for Soviet collective farms, vets, foresters and rural doctors, and it turned out to be years ahead of the class: unibody, permanent four-wheel drive and a low range in a package the size of a supermini.
