Brownchurch

Brownchurch was formed in East London in 1970 by Dennis Brown and Chris Church, the company's own account pairing its foundation with the launch year of the Range Rover, to make accessories 'capable of matching the rugged capabilities' of the Land Rover. The limited company predates the trading name: Companies House records Brownchurch (Components) Limited incorporated on 11 December 1968, renamed Brownchurch (Land-Rovers) Limited at the end of 1978 and Brownchurch Ltd in May 1991. Its works and offices were at Bickley Road, Leyton, London E10, where the roof racks were welded and hot-dip galvanised to BS729 in the firm's own workshop.

The product range grew into a numbered catalogue of Land Rover fittings: the LR4 bumper-to-bumper and LR5 truck-cab racks, the LR10 general-purpose and LR11 heavy-duty full-length racks, LR15 and LR17 rear ladders, the LR16 crew-cab rack, LR22 jerry-can holders, LR24 sand ladders, the LR26 bush bar, steering and differential guards, an in-wing auxiliary fuel tank, a steel security cubby box and an 'Overlanders' roof tent, with a 2011 price list still offering the lot. Alongside manufacturing the firm ran a Land Rover service workshop, prepared vehicles for overland expeditions, and claimed thirty years' experience of tax-free export sales to private buyers, governments and NGOs; its customers included Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, the Ministry of Defence and charities, and it had agents in Europe and the United States. The company marked its fortieth anniversary in 2010.

Control passed from the founding generation to Steven and Joanne Tyler, appointed directors in April 2001, while Charles Jones of Bickley Road remained a director until December 2011. By 2019 the website had been cut down to a single page giving an Upminster, Essex telephone number and email address, and the registered office moved to a private address at Clay Tye Road, Upminster. In February 2020 a Land Rover owner reported that Brownchurch had ceased trading, while another replied that the name was still trading, selling gutter clamps in September 2019, but was 'much smaller now' and might no longer be making racks.

Brownchurch Ltd is still shown as active at Companies House, filing micro-company accounts (the latest to 30 June 2025) and confirmation statements into 2026 under SIC codes covering motor-vehicle parts manufacture, sales and repair. The brownchurch.co.uk domain still resolves but no longer serves a website. Whether any manufacturing continues could not be established; second-hand Brownchurch racks remain sought after by Defender owners.
