History
Hannibal Safari Equipment describes itself as having grown 'from modest beginnings' into an international 4x4 accessory manufacturer, with 'over 15 years of experience in the 4x4 accessory industry' on its website in January 2015 and 'over 20 years' on the current page, which places its start in the late 1990s; no founding date or founder is given on the company's own pages. Its Australian and New Zealand distribution began in 2004, when Pete Spowart, previously in 4WD suspension, started importing the South African-made products.
The company operates from 'centrally located premises in Cape Town' with what it calls a modern manufacturing plant; its 2013 website gave the address as Unit 1, 62 Bofors Circle, Epping 2, Cape Town, in the Epping Industria zone, and the telephone number on that page is the one still in use. Its stated design principles are simplicity, ruggedness and quality, its products proven 'through extensive Safari use' in African conditions.
The roof tents are the core of the range: the Hannibal roof tent family, the Impi and Jumbo kits, all canvas tents that fold out on a roof rack, together with side awnings. The roof racks are vehicle-specific, with dedicated Land Rover fitments for the Defender 90, 110 and 130, the Discovery 1, 2 and 3, the Range Rover Classic and later Range Rover and the Freelander (the 110 rack 2.78 m long and 45 kg) alongside Toyota, Mitsubishi, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Mazda, Isuzu and Nissan, and the Ruff Stuff range adds recovery and camping accessories. A Hannibal roof tent photographed on a Land Rover Discovery at the Norwegian Land Rover Club's thirtieth-anniversary meeting in 2005 shows how far the tents had travelled by then.
Hannibal sells through stockists across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada; the Australian importer later began making its own canvas tents locally while continuing to import the South African hard-shell models.
